a little help. She glanced at the door suspiciously. How well would
you say you boys know that Nurse Betty?
Jacob at the Break of Dawn 131
Actually, Alex said, a bemused smirk creeping into his tone as
he recalled the things Betty had revealed during their last
conversation. I would say she knows Jasper pretty well.
Adrianna raised an eyebrow at him. Do I want to know?
Probably not. But I m sure when the time comes, he can be of
help. Alex stiffened a little as he considered the implications of his
euphemism. When the time comes. He glanced at his mother again.
Do you really think I can make it through? I mean, last time we

The intensity of the look Adrianna gave Alex stopped him
midsentence. I think you know as well as I do just how unbelievably
headstrong you are.
Alex bit his lip, nodding. He knew, all right. He also knew that
stubbornness probably wasn t a quality that would allow him to open
his mind up and let his body be transported to another reality.
Which means, Adrianna continued, her insistent tone cutting
through Alex s thoughts, once you make your mind up to do
something? Anything is possible.

Chapter Seven
Alex sat cross-legged on his bed, his palms resting flat against
Jacob s, trying to channel the psychic energy of the universe.
God help him, the things he did for love.
Love? He d been trying his level best to even out his breathing, as
Jacob had instructed him to do, but that thought stopped him. He kept
thinking about that night that Jacob had said it to him, but as much as
it thrilled him to be loved by his mate, he couldn t bring himself to
say the words back to him. Certainly Alex felt something a lot of
something for his mate, but whether or not it was love was another
matter altogether. As much as he wanted it, the weird, ephemeral
feeling was too intangible to pinpoint. And with how dense Alex was,
he doubted he d recognize love if it leaned over and smacked him.
Ow!
Alex was jarred out of his thoughts when Jacob leaned over and
smacked him.
Opening his eyes, he jerked his hands away from his mate s.
What the hell was that for?
I told you to stop judging every thought that passes through your
head as good or bad. You know this is never going to work if you
don t listen to me. And sit up.
Okay, okay, sorry! Alex protested, trying his damndest to stack
the vertebrae in his back. He didn t know what the hell that meant, but
from what Jacob had told him, he gathered it had something to do
with not slouching. In a demented, New Age, touchy-feely sort of
way, he mentally added, remembering the utter solemnity with which

Jacob had attempted to guide him through breathing exercises. Alex
snorted. Breathing exercises. Like he really needed to practice that.
Ow! he shouted as Jacob slapped him again. Look, I m really
trying not to judge this stuff.
Really? Jacob asked.
Really, Alex promised. If this is what works for you, I trust
you.
Well, Jacob said, clearing his throat. I mean, I never said
exactly that it worked for me. I just sort of do it naturally.
Yeah, but you ve done this stuff before, right? I mean, I practice
shifting, and you practice& stacking your vertebrae. Or whatever.
Right? Alex asked, waiting for reassurance from his mate. Jacob,
however, had suddenly gone very quiet. Right?
Um&
Alex narrowed his eyes at Jacob. Where did you get all this stuff
you ve been telling me?
WikiHow?
Alex raised an eyebrow at Jacob, whose quickly reddening face
was turned determinedly toward the comforter. He hadn t exactly
checked into it himself, but he had a sneaking suspicion there wasn t a
Wikipedia page on how to better condition oneself for planeswalking.
On what? Alex asked.
Jacob smirked as if at a private joke. Rather not say.
WikiHow on what?
The smirk widened into a grin. Astral projection?
Oh, you are so dead.
Jacob laughed and shrieked as Alex grabbed him with both hands
and flipped him over onto the bed, pinning him down before he could
squirm away. Okay, okay! Give!
Nope. Too late, angel, Alex said, lowering himself over Jacob.
He ran a hand experimentally down his back, and Jacob shivered.
Christ, even the small shudder of his mate under him was getting him
hard. I ve got you right where I want you.
